Setting and achieving goals requires planning and discipline

Setting and achieving goals is certainly not an easy activity. It requires great character, discipline and hard work. It also requires considerable planning. You have to make sure that you don’t lose the big picture while you struggle to achieve the sub-tasks.

The first thing that you need to do is to write your goal on a piece of paper. The goal should be realistic and achievable. It should not be based on sheer enthusiasm because those goals are never achieved. While writing down the goal make sure that the goal is specific, can be measured, is action-oriented and has well-defined time targets.

You now need to break this goal into manageable steps. This means that you divide your goal into several sub-goals. For instance, if your goal is to clear your credit card debt, you need to move from credit to debit cards; discontinue your existing credit cards; and transfer you credit card balance to those card companies that charge a lower rate of interest.

For each sub-task you need to assign a time frame. You also must make sure that you do not to miss any payment. This is very important because you will reach nowhere, if you are not motivated.

You also need to set up a mechanism that cautions you whenever you fail to achieve your sub-goal. Such a system keeps you focused, and you continue to move forward from one sub-goal to another, on schedule.

You also need to review your goals frequently because reviews keep things in perspective and help you take correctional measures. If need be, you can alter your sub-goals to make sure that you are able to achieve the main goal.

So to sum it all up, goals are good if you can set them the right way. They are better if you can reach them. Please remember that there is only one person who can achieve your goals -- and that person is you.
