Life goals can bring discipline to your life

There are very few people who draw up life goals. Most want to take one step at a time, and are frankly daunted at the prospect of mapping a lifetime. To them life is too big and too unpredictable to be reduced to a few goals.

They can’t be more wrong. The life goals are only a roadmap. They record what you want to be at the end of your life. Some may want to be known as great philanthropists, some may want to be known as great scientists. Others may want to be known as great builders or even great sportsmen. There is no end to what you may want to be.

However, the only way you can achieve your dream is by writing down your goal. Once you have done that, you need to break this goal into several small goals. These are what are known as short-term goals, and should be planned for one to three year periods. Each short goal should mesh seamlessly with the next goal.

While writing the short goals you must provide for change. Nothing is static in this world. If you want to achieve your goals you should be prepared to modify them from time to time. This makes your goals current, and relevant.

Also, there cannot be just one life goal. There are at least five subjects that you need to address. These are: education, career, family, health and finances. You will find that all these goals are interlinked. For instance, there can be no career goals unless they are backed by education goals. Similarly, there can be no family goals unless they are based on realistic financial goals.

None of these goals is taught in college. Yes, there are some families that try to train their children to think logically, and plan for their life. These are the happy families, because they know what they want to achieve in life. They are also mentally prepared for most of the hurdles they expect to encounter on the way.

You too can be like them if you plan your life early. You can even plan it late, but then your goals have to be scaled down as not enough time is left to achieve them.
